Early Baseball

    Baseball is one of the oldest and most popular spectator sports. The game known today was developed during the early 1800s among children and rookie players. Today, major league and rookie baseball attracts millions of viewers to ballparks each year and attracts millions more through the radio and television. A popular legend states that Abner Doubleday, who was a Union officer during the American Civil War, invented baseball in Cooperstown, New York in 1839. But this legend has very little reasons and details supporting it. I have researched baseball and found that the following legend, to me, has presented many details and reasons concluding to why it’s the best legend that has been told. In the early 1800’s in England. A game was made up called Rounders. This game was that a batter was to hit a ball and run around bases without being out. Balls that were caught without hitting the ground, or after one bounce, were outs. Rounders also involved the practice of plugging, in which fielders could throw out runners by throwing the ball at them when they ran between bases.
