Medieval Knighthood
Lancelot and Lanval are two stories that deal with Knighthood and the duty of a knight toward a woman. This essay will compare the knights in each story and how they were dutiful to woman, as well as describe what the role of women was in the medieval times.
In The story Lancelot, the knights were given a duty toward women that was esteemed higher than personal honor. To disobey a woman in the story meant that the knight would suffer some consequence. In the story Lancelot, the knight learns through four different struggles that obeying a woman’s command proved beneficial.
The first incident the knight faces in Lancelot is when the knight is finding rest in the palace of a damsel. She is very hospitable with him and shows him to his bedroom where he will sleep that night. She shows him the bed, which he is to sleep in as well as a bed that he is not to sleep in. That bed was meant only for a knight who truly merited that luxury. The knight is displeased with the idea that he is not worthy enough to sleep in the bed and so audaciously he sleeps in it anyway.
