Whaling
“One of the worst examples of wildlife exploitation in the history of the world is provided by the whaling industry. So far, no species of whale has become extinct because of whaling, but many species have been reduced to ‘commercial extinction’”
Whales have roamed the oceans of our world for thousands of years, always attracting curiosity and interest from man. This curiosity has lead to many acts of violence by man; acts that have been taking place since 865AD and have continued ever since. These include the brutal slaying of whales for the richness and success of man. The massacring of these gentle creatures is known as whaling and has brought much wealth to various countries and towns around the world.
When whaling first began many years ago, whalers would use primitive harpoons to catch these large creatures. They would unleash hundreds of shots until the whale eventually died – after much pain and suffering - and floated on the surface. They would then drag the poor animal by ropes, which were attached to ship back to the harbour where they were based.
