The Odyssey
The Odyssey, by Homer, recounts the story of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who fights in the Trojan War and wins. Afterwards he travels towards Ithaca, but does not reach home because of his ill favor with Poseidon, god of the sea, who prevents his return. For many years, Odysseus wanders the seas enduring many hardships. Meanwhile, suitors attempt to marry Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, but she remains faithful to her husband. The gods pity Odysseus and assist in his safe return to Ithaca. Odysseus has a diversity of qualities that make him very resourceful. These resources enable him to survive the adventures he undergoes. Resourcefulness comes to Odysseus by his help from the gods, physical prowess, quest for self-knowledge, and clever mind.
Odysseus’ resourcefulness comes from his help from the gods. Time after time the goddess of the flashing eyes, Athene, aids him in his adventures.
