Effects of Failed Marriages

    Marriage is the relationship between a man and a woman who have made a legal agreement to live together. When a man and a woman marry, they legally become husband and wife (Broderick). According to Article 5 of the Family Code of the Philippines, any individual may undergo marriage as long as he doesn’t violate Article 37 and 38. They must also be on the proper age that is 18 or above. These [Articles 37 and 38] tell us that marriage will be voided if it’s between ascendants and descendants, brothers and sisters, step-parents and step children, collateral blood relations, adopting parents and adopted child, between surviving spouse of the adopting parent and the adopted child. Lastly, marriage shall be cancelled if it is between an adopted child and a legitimate child of the adopter (Veloso). If these qualifications are met then, they can undergo matrimony. This act of commitment then falls into the creation of a family. It [family] is the basic unit of social organization in all human societies. Since prehistoric times, families have served as the primary institution responsible for raising children, providing people with food and shelter, and satisfying people's need for love and support (Mintz, 1996).
