GMF ( Geneticaly Modified Food)
THE BENEFITS OF GMF
GM plants can be made to be resistant to diseases and pests which would result in a lower use of agricultural chemicals. Gm crops can be made to be resistant to pesticides e.g. Monsanto’s soy beans has been made resistant to roundup. This will mean that farmers will be able to use less harmful pesticides that are more effective and use less of it. Herbicide resistant crops can also be made with gene technology, so farmers are able to spray a more effective form of herbicide and use less of it which is better for the environment. Herbicide resistant crops will enable farmers to reduce tillage because they can wait until the crop is established before they spray herbicide instead of having to plough in advance to get rid of weeds, thereby improving soil structure and farmers using less fuel.
Some medicines widely used in Australia are genetically modified, e.g. most insulin for diabetics are produced by gene technology. An added benefit is that medicines are cheaper to buy.
Gm crops can be made to have inbuilt vaccines so that livestock’s feed will contain a vaccine in it. This makes the job of vaccinating livestock much easier for farmers.
GMF is one the best ways to help world hunger bec
