Einstein = Atomic Bomb?
On August 6, 1945, Hiroshima was obliterated by the atomic bomb. When tracing the roots of the creation of the atomic bomb, many people come to the conclusion that Einstein was responsible for it because of his famous energy-mass formula, E=mc2. Although Einstein created the formula that provided the foundation for the creation of the atomic bomb, it was the way in which other physicists interpreted and manipulated Einstein’s work to create what would launch us into the atomic age: the atomic bomb. In fact, contrary to popular belief, the truth is that Einstein was not the father of the bomb.
When Einstein was younger, he seemed to have an innate aversion to authority, conservative views, war, etc. Eventually this developed into a belief in pacifism, which played a major role in his outlook on life and science. Einstein described his pacifism in this quote: “My pacifism is an instinctive feeling, a feeling that possesses me because the murder of men is disgusting. (Severance 69)” The major reason Einstein became a pacifist is more than likely a result of his environment. Einstein’s heritage and place of birth [Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879] were like oil and water; he was a Jew born in Germany
