Eleusinian Mysteries
The Eleusinian Mysteries were festivals that took place in the city of Eleusis.
The city of Eleusis was a city in Greece that was well known by many people. (The Ecole Initiative, The Eleusinian Mysteries 1). The Panhellenic games was another festival that took place in Greece. These games were also known as the Olympics, where only men would compete in events, such as today.
The Eleusinian Mysteries, were held annually in honor if Demeter and Persephone, and were the most sacred and revered of all the ritual celebrations of ancient Greece (Baring 369). The Eleusinian Mysteries began on the 15th day of the Greek lunar month of Boedromion, which is also known as September, and ended nine days later (Ron Leadbetter 1). On the first day they brought sacred objects from Eleusis to the Eleusinon, which was a temple at the base of the Acropolis. The following day they would travel to the city of Eleusis along a walk known as the “Sacred Way” (Eleusinian mysteries- Wikipedia). Along this walk they would fast. Once they had reached Eleusis they would go to the temples and worship the goddesses. Towards the end of the festival, they would have an all night feast, along with dancing.
