Open Water Catchments
In open catchments and the major reservoirs associated with them, human habitation is excluded and public access, recreational use and any activity, which could affect the water, are minimised or prohibited. Because of these safety cautions and long storage time periods in the reservoirs, only minimal disinfection of the water is required to ensure health and safety.
Closed Water Catchments
The percentage of water that comes from closed catchments (or non- protected catchments) is mainly drawn from the Yarra River. The use of the river water for human consumption without adequate treatment may place the kept in the Sugarloaf Reservoir is fully treated at the Winneke water treatment plant.
