Effective Engine Isolation

    1. Introduction There are several reasons for isolating vibration from diesel engines. The primary reason is to increase the life and value of the equipment. Harmful vibrations can add unnecessary stresses on components of the engine and other peripheral equipment. Through the use of properly engineered vibration mounts, these stresses can be reduced and the life of components drastically increased. Another benefit of engine isolation is the comfort of operators and surrounding personnel. Engine isolation can reduce vibration levels to an unnoticeable level and help reduce noise levels to a tolerable limit. All of the above benefits add to the overall perception of the equipment. 2. Background To begin discussing engine isolation, a little background is needed to properly understand the goals to be met. Vibration isolation is achieved by interrupting the path of disturbing vibrations through the use of a resilient mounting system. The concept can be generalized by looking at a simple single degree of freedom system, shown in the figure 2.1. Figure 2.1 The equation of motion for this system is given as: where F is the disturbing force. (2.1) If damping is assumed to be negligible, the natural frequency of
