Gilbert Stuart

After he had been in London for two years he wrote to the artist Benjamin West, begging him for help because he could not support himself. West, and American, who had been living in London since 1763, took him on as a pupil and assistant. From 1777 to 1782, Stuart worked as an assistant for West. Stuart soon had his own studio in which he was no able to work as a portrait painter. In 1782, Stuart completed his first major portrait called The Skater. This enabled Stuart to establish his own buissness as a portrait painter.

In 1786, Stuart married Charlotte Coates, an English girl who would eventually have twelve children with Stuart. Stuart and his new wife would move to Dublin. It is in Dublin that Stuart enjoyed a large and fashionable patronage, partly because of his charming personality and wit. He charged high prices for his work, but he also spent money lavishly and went deep into debt. In 1787 he fled Dublin to escape his creditors.

The third portrait was the Athenaeum whish was never completely finished. This is a portrait of the head or George Washington. Martha Washington commissioned this portrait. Stuart kept the original version while Martha had to remain content with on of the seventy-five replicas. Stuart would keep his unfinished paintings until his death, using the likeness of Washington as the basis for many subsequent portraits, which were painted to meet the steady demand for Washingtons image. Engraving it on the United Sates one-dollar bill has immortalized the Athenaeum portrait.
