Hot Dogs In Cars
EMERGENCY TREATMENT
If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke:
v Immediately move to a cool place
v Wet dog with cool water
v Fan vigorously to promote evaporation.
v Do not apply ice. This constricts blood flow.
v Allow the dog to sip some cool water
v Get the dog’s temperature down below 104o F.
v Take the dog immediately to a veterinarian.
COMPLICATIONS: Even if a dog is successfully cooled, he may develop internal organ damage, which may not be noticeable for 1-5 days after apparent recovery.
SIGNS OF COMPLICATIONS:
v Clotting
v Kidney & liver failure
v Gastrointestinal damage
v Bleeding
v Failure to urinate
v Jaundice
v Vomiting
v Diarrhea
HEATSTROKE
(HYPERTHERMIA)
v Dog’s normal body mechanisms cannot keep
the body’s temperature in a safe range.
v A dog’s body temperature is normally between
101o F and 102o F.
v Sweat glands on the soles of their feet
· Perspire around their paws
