Opening Sequence

    The first scene of Macbeth is very short, but full of punch. The thunder and lightning give it a powerful opening, which grabs the attention of the audience, as it is representative of wickedness. These dramatic sound effects creates the creepy and paranormal atmosphere that Shakespeare wanted to create along with the witches. The witches introduce us to a dark, dangerous play, in which they foreshadow the themes. The mood of the play is set here, although the action does not start until the next scene. The existence of supernatural forces in the opening of ‘Macbeth´ provides for much of the play´s dramatic friction and the mounting suspense. “When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or rain?” (I i. 1-2) This immediately grasps the audience and pushes their imagination. The weird witches captivate the audience's thoughts early on.
