For The Love of Sports
Sports play a large role in many aspects of American culture reaching beyond lines of class, race, and even gender (Richman and Shaffer 189). Athletic competition has been part of our society since the early beginnings of man. Gladiators, wrestlers and sprinters are early types of athletes who competed. Mankind seems to have been born with the desire to compete; every man feels the need to have dominance over other men. These facts are even apparent in today’s society. This is a part of what drives college athletes into athletics. Sports fans love the thrill of hard college competition. College athletes are more dedicated, more determined, and more focused than many professional athletes. People have a different motive for participating in sports. College athletes have the internal desires to compete for the love of their sports. In the film Love and Basketball Monica (Sanna Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) teach each other how to play the game. Their commitment to sports, however, will force them to make a choice between each other and the game, between family and team, between love and basketball.
