Islamophobia
When the letters of the phrase “Islamic fundamentalists” are mixed around, the anagram “Lame misfits and lunatics” is formed. Media is much the same – news is manipulated, resulting in biased accounts about countless issues, particularly religion. Western media’s misquotation, misinterpretation and misuse of Islamic ideals have portrayed Muslims as extremists and terrorists. Misconceptions of Islam, Muslims, and stereotypes of fundamentalists have negatively impacted on a peaceful Islamic community. Consumers worldwide have a duty to be critical viewers, listeners and readers but they are failing to consider all sides to the story. The western media’s prejudice against Muslims has downgraded their status in society and sparked a wave of “Islamophobia” in light of recent terrorist attacks. Consequently, this has led to the question, “Whom should God save us from, his followers or the media who slander them?”
Misconceptions of Islam and its Holy Book, the Qur’an, have provided the media with propaganda to use against Muslims worldwide. Many verses in the Qur’an have been misquoted by mass media, when in reality no such verses exist in the text itself. Süra (chapter) II of the Qur’an states, “Fight
