The viewer is left to make his own conclusions as to what the artist is trying to show us. The depressing sunset in the painting can bring into play all kinds of images of horror. Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” was painted in the end of the 19th century, and is possibly the first Expressionist painting of that time. The Scream was very different from the art of the time, when many artists tried to represent objective realism. Edvard Munch's most famous work has gained enormously in popularity over time.
