Argentina
Argentina covers about 1.07 million square miles (2.7 million square kilometers), about one-third of the area of the United States. It is second in size in Latin America, following Brazil. The highest point is Aconagua, which is 22,835 feet (6,960 meters). The lowest point in Argentina is 131 feet (40 meters) below sea level. Its major rivers are the Paraguay, Uruguay, and the Rio de la Plata. The major mountain region that runs through Argentina is the Andes. The capital, Buenos Aires, is Argentina’s largest city with a population of over ten million. The total population is roughly 34.7 million (1996 census) and about 32 people per square mile. Other major cities are Cordoba, Rosario, and La Plata. It is fourth in population in Latin America, following Brazil, Mexico, and Columbia. Chile borders Argentina to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, and Brazil and Uruguay to the east. Argentina is divided into 22 provinces. It has a high literacy rate of 95 percent. Argentina comes from a Latin word meaning, “silver.”
