The Dramatization and Persuasions of Richard III:
An Examination of Two Staged Performances
Richard III, as the text reveals him, provides a significant amount of breadth for an actor/actress’ development of the role. Between the lines of the induction, the performer has the opportunity to develop Richard III’s deformities in a manner befitting their own dramatic license. With this in consideration, each of their choices transforms the tone and perception of Richard III’s overall disposition. There are numerous unwritten, yet implied, suggestions for theatrical interpretation. Each choice, naturally, has a profound impact on those involved in the actions of the play. Richard’s varied dramatizations and persuasions affect two dynamically different perspectives: the one on stage and the other in the audience. Within each performance, the players’ interpretation of the character emulsifies to create various shades of meaning. The elements of Richard’s character include his comic aspect, conniving nature, and final remorse for his avarice.
