Othello and Change

    The changes in Othello’s language show the changing attitudes in Othello. These changing attitudes in turn, alter the state of Othello’s character. By analysing Othello’s language in the famous play Othello written by a well-known playwright, William Shakespeare, we can therefore understand why this tragic drama is such a phenomenally successful play. William Shakespeare always reveals his characters in their language. Othello’s language is throughout, a direct representation of his true state of mind. Othello first appears before us as a bold, noble black Venetian officer and his language portrays him to be an upright gentleman. Making good opinions about his wife and himself, he appears confident, charming and not self-lacking of any temperament. “My services which I have done the signiory shall out-tongue his complaints…I love the gentle Desdemona, I would not my unhoused free condition put into circumscription and confine for the sea’s worth.” Othello speaks in prose here. His language suggests control unlike the other characters. He is very open and willing to tell us about his past. We see Othello to be noble in character and honest. Honesty is the only path to take.
