Who Sank The Lusitania
The “Lusitania” was a British passenger liner, the biggest and fastest of her time. She was launched in May in 1907 and traveled on the trans-Atlantic route between England and the USA. She was torpedoed by a German submarine on 7th May 1915 near the south coast of Ireland and sank with heavy loss of life. However the actual cause of the sinking has remained a controversial topic to this very day.
When the Lusitania sank in 1915, there was no doubt in the minds of the English people as to what had caused it to sink. The British believed the Germans were murderers because they attacked an innocent passenger liner with unarmed children, mothers and immigrants. A London newspaper of the time stated, “They have been foully murdered to gratify the venomous hate of that egotistical monster ” (1) and they also claimed “Two torpedoes were fired at the vessel from the German submarine” (2). Britain made out to the world that what had taken place was worse than it actually was. They wanted to make everyone else feel sorry for them and feel outraged by the Germans actions. Britain thought if they made Germany sound “barbaric” then maybe some other countries would join them in the war against Germany.
