Both Lewis Carroll and Julia Margaret Cameron were prominent portrait photographers in the 1860’s. They each took different approaches to common sitter, Alice Liddell, by photographing her at different times in her life. Carroll photographed the pre-pubescent girl in situations such as Beggar Girl, while Cameron photographed the bold young woman in images like Alethia.
Julia Margaret Cameron was born on June 11th, 1815, in Calcutta, India. She approached photography at the age of forty-eight and devoted the next fifteen years of her life to its service. Her social status allowed her the friendship of important personalities in art and literature. She portrayed many important personalities of the Victorian world in her photographs, although she took pictures of her family and servants, as well. Some of her most renowned portraits are those of Alice Liddell, following the trend of romanticism at the time.
