“Nineteen Eighty Four”
A Study of George Orwell’s use of Winston Smith to Illustrate the Nature and Fragility of True Humanity.
“Nineteen Eighty Four” by George Orwell is an excellent novel based on a totalitarian future. The results and consequences of such a world are shown through the main character of Winston Smith. He tries to remain an individual and think for himself in a world where this is a crime. The novel shows how his human qualities help him to survive and what happens when these fragile qualities are challenged by the state. In this essay I intend to show how the author uses the character of Winston and the technique of symbolism to compare the real human qualities in him to the artificial human qualities created around him.
Winston is first introduced at the beginning, where he is about to commit a political crime. He starts to write a diary of his thoughts and feelings. This shows that he does not listen mindlessly to the Government or “the party” but thinks for himself. This made me feel that right from the beginning I could trust this character. Outside the window are the first signs of lies and manipulation by “the party” whose aims are to prevent such independence of though
