Antigone

    The Family Bond Love for a family member can never be destroyed. In the story Antigone, by Sophocles, the bond between a brother and a sister is tested. Antigone, daughter of Odepius, puts her own life on the line in order to respectfully bury her dead brother. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, has proclaimed that Antigone’s brother Polyneices is not to be buried because he fought against Creon in the civil war of Thebes. He declares that anyone who buries his body shall be executed for treason, but regardless of these threats Antigone buries her brother. Creon and Antigone definitely have many opposing views about the bond between two family members. Antigone understands that regardless of the laws of society, the bond between two family members requires respect in life and in death. In the play, Creon publicly declares that Polyneices’ body is not to be moved. He states that his body is to lay unburied as food for carrion animals. Ismene, Antigones sister, refuses to help Antigone bury their brother’s body for fear of her own life. Antigone therefore decides to bury it on her own. Regardless of Creonâ€
