Debuting Sep 22, 1994, it was immediately successful in its portrayal of American culture. From the beginning, Americans from coast to coast could be seen and heard copying the clothes the actors wore and using the same lingo as the scriptwriters coined for the show.
By performing a close cultural critique I will be able to show that the TV show "Friends" not only sets standards of living for people and reiterates in each episode that friends are the most important things to have in your life, but also that in real life that a group of friends as diverse as the ones on the TV show, would be vary rare to find.
Do you ever go to the mall to sit and watch the people I do it all the time. I sit there and I watch dozens of people walk by who are dressed almost identically. They have the same hairstyle, and use the same lingo. But what made them buy that outfit, and why do they choose that particular hairstyle Why do they talk like that
I saw a girl once who looked as though she had come straight off the set of "Friends". She was like an exact replica of pretty, preppy Rachel Greene, in a forest green sweater with a short black skirt. Her hair was even cut and styled just like the actres

This is the kind of humor that is expected from Joey"tms character. Joey is a smooth-talking, Italian actor, who has a reputation for being good with the ladies, and for having a good heart. The creatorsproducers Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane, chose to have Joey in this mix of funny characteristics to add some dumb humor. Monica, the perpetual perfectionist, brings her own taste of comedy to the show in the way she overacts about everything being neat and perfect in her apartment. The laughter comes from the way the other characters play off of her perfectionism. They are scared that chaos will erupt at the slightest alteration of an object in her apartment. Monica comes from a life where she was an obese child; her house hold consists of two Jewish parents who don"tmt pay much attention to her, as she"tms constantly in the shadow of her older brother Ross. Monica"tms roommate Rachel brings laughter through her obsession with her looks and attitude. She thinks in a way that only one who has gotten everything they wanted in life could. Rachel comes from a wealthy family where her father, a doctor, gave her everything she ever wanted. Now she is out living independently with the same spoiled views and morals she had growing up. The next character is Monica"tms brother, Ross. Ross brings laughter to the show by having bad luck and making decisions that put him in uncomfortable and abnormal situations. He comes from the same household as Monica, yet we are more familiar with the background of Ross through is relations ship with his first wife Carol, who divorced Ross on behalf of the fact that she is a lesbian and she is living with her significant other. Ross is helping them raise his and Carol"tms son.
What can you say about the TV show "Friends" I"tmd say it is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. It cracks me up to see the characters of the show go through an episode acting as they always do. They become predictable at time, yet I"tmm still glued to my television set. I"tmm even glued when I"tmm watching reruns of the show. I know what they are going to say moments before the joke; a huge smile appears on my face as soon as Joey, the "dumb one" is about to say something completely in character. Example:
All of the characters have their own representation in society. Being characters in a play or TV show basically forces actors to portray their character as an extreme of what they stand for in order for people to be entertained, because extremities are entertaining. Odds are that you can look your entire life for a person in the world that is an exact match of a character in a comedy series and not find one ever. This is not surprising at all. The characteristics of the characters are too bizarre and extreme for anyone to have in their entirety. They are merely representations of a person"tms personality that they wished would be more apparent in their everyday lives. Joey represents the masculine-male side of that personality that those who are shy around the opposite sex wish they could express more often. Monica represents the perfectionist side of a person, where the need to make everything perfect exists inside, and the outbursts that come out when it doesn"tmt happen perfectly. Rachel represents the selfish side of you
