Comfort Zones
There are many people in many different places around the world that live in one place all their life. When they are given the opportunity to move to another place they decline the opening for a new change of environment, and perhaps a more fulfilling ambiance. They develop a sense of security where they are and therefore decide to stay within that comfort zone. Ernest Hemingway, in the short stories “Hills Like White Elephants” and “A Clean Well Lighted Place,” is able to show how people, no matter where they are in life, will stay in a comfort zone in order to stay happy, rather than making a change or stepping to the other side to see if that can bring more happiness.
Staying inside a comfort zone to a person can escalate so intensely that they will put a heavy burden on a loved one to fulfill their desire. In “Hills Like White Elephants” the man is strongly indicating that he wants the girl to get an abortion in order for his life and their relationship to remain the same. He says comments like “It’s an awfully simple operation Jig.” “It’s not really an operation at all,”(275) implying that he has no care for her feelings and opinions.
