Excessive Force of Necessary Restraint?
What started as a usual March night in Los Angeles, California, ended up in terror for African American motorist Rodney King. Police, following a high-speed car chase, had apprehended Rodney King. When police stopped his car, King hesitated when the police instructed him to get out of his car. When he did get out, he apparently appeared to have lunged at the officers. King was struck by two darts from a taser gun, which exceeded 50,000 volts, which is usually enough to subdue any suspect. According to police, he continued to refuse to obey the instructions to lie flat on the ground. In less than tow minutes, King was struck with fifty-six baton blows and kicked six times. He suffered eleven skull fractures, brain damage, broken teeth and bones, and kidney damage, not to mention emotional, mental, and physical trauma. The officers involved in the beating claim the force was needed to restrain King. People across the United States strongly disagree and label the police officer’s actions excessive force.
