Zinn Paper
When teaching history to a child, not many details are given to what exactly that person was like or what events lead to the real cause of the situation. It gives more of a basic overview and “sugar-coats” it for them. But as that student advances to higher grade levels, more and more controversial information is given, and it’s not as sugar coated anymore. They are given more hard evidence of what took place in history. This paper describes some of the sugar coating the text gave, and the real factual information Zinn offered to us.
Columbus
When examining Columbus in the text and Zinn’s book, it was found that the text seemed to give only vague statements about Columbus, where as Zinn gave more detail about him. The text states that Columbus was the first slave trader and the first Spanish explorer conqueror (P. 25). In Zinn it stated that when he came ashore, he was carrying swords. The Arawaks came out to greet them and Columbus took some of them captive right away and began to force information about what the island was like. Zinn’s view of Columbus was that he was an evil tyrant, and all he was searching for was gold and land he could have. That was one of the first things he stated when reaching the new land
