Billy Budd

    Billy Budd Billy Budd is the story of a sailor, Billy Budd, who was originally on the merchant ship, The Rights of Man, but was impressed into the British navy. The new ship that he was on was called The Avenger. Billy mixed with the other sailors on the ship well, and he made quite a few friends. Even though he did not want to be impressed, he never showed anger or hatred to anyone on the ship. Soon after Billy arrived, he realized that almost everyone on the ship hated Mr. Claggart, the Master at Arms. Billy never hated Mr. Claggart even though he was the man who took him away from The Rights of Man. Then, Jenkins, one of Billy’s friends, became ill, and he could barely even stand up. Jenkins worked on the foretops, and it was time for him to go on duty. Mr. Claggart was near, and Billy and Jenkins both pleaded with Mr. Claggart to let Jenkins be off due to his sickness. Their pleading did nothing to the cold-hearted Mr. Claggart, and he forced Jenkins to climb to the foretops. Inevitably, Jenkins fell to his death, and Captain Vere asked about what had happened. Mr. Claggart lied to the captain and said that Jenkins insisted on working even though he was sick, but Billy told the captain the truth. Captain Vere
