Citizen Kane
Being a fan of movies, I have often lingered over the Citizen Kane DVD at my local Blockbuster, even walked around the store with it in my grasp a few times, ready to take it with me. But, I already knew the "big punchline;" man misses the simplicity and innocence of childhood. I have zipped to about 15 web sites suggested for literary material and reviews of movies, and found it ironic that people felt guilty covering what they felt was old territory, and shared there favorite moment or interpretation on what seems to be generally regarded as the greatest film ever made. Many also commented on how it seemed to mean different things to different people, that alone perhaps the greatest compliment any work of art can have in my opinion. I ulitmately was drawn to Roger Ebert's Suntimes site, knowing by now that he has a commentary track on the restored DVD edition. And much to my surprise, I found that no one had mentioned what I thought the film was clearly about, the shallowness of wealth. The fact that film was made in 1941 and not the least bit censored (as far as I know), is stunning to me.
The use of deep-focus on the film was perhaps necessary, and for me a little annoying. First, I noticed that on the opening of the
