The purpose of this analysis was to suggest that German Field Marshal von Rundstedt was a remnant of days gone by; when commanders were accustomed to following chain of command and using tactics designed for engaging warfare that were obsolete for the renovated German military. He was a soldier and commander who went by the book and did not always agree with Hitler’s radical methods of domination and superiority. Von Rundstedt did not leave much behind any detailed biography on his perception of being a leader, so there was little documentation on his feeling about the war effort. The pieces of paper he did leave behind were mostly letters to his wife, cryptic army memoranda, the army diary log, and the thoughts of his colleagues.
Fallen to a bygone era of cavalrymen, proper conducts of war, and the Geneva Convention; von Rundstedt was cynical and contemptuous about the mad dash to invade eastern and western Europe using new methods of destruction unheard of twenty years prior.
