Popular music borrows from old

Matt Sheets Music Paper #2 03/14/03 Some music songs stand the test of time and some don’t. Some in fact stand the test of times and are so good or have suck good beats that other artist will in fact remake or remix them. In some cases they will just use the beats of a song and not the words or chorus at all. This happens a lot in the Hip-Hop or Rap genre where artist such as Doctor Dre, Snoop Dogg, R Kelly, P.Diddy, and Eminem have used the beats to a popular 80’s song as the beats to a number one rap hit. P.Diddy AKA Puff Daddy was very successful in the early ninety’s doing this with such songs as Been Around The World, You Can Hate Me Now, and Can’t No Buddy Hold Us Down. All of these were top hits for him and all of these also sampled beats from previous songs. Most of the time when a Rap artist will do this he will use the beats of a song that was not a tremendous pop hit. But this was not the case with rapper Eminem AKA Slim Shaddy when he produced a song called Sing For The Moment on his newest album The Eminem Show. This song is a remake of the popular Aerosmith song Dream On from the 1970’s. In fact the Detroit rapper did not just remake or used the beats of this song he used the actual refrain. Steven Tyle
