Imagine you have just finished competing in a horserace when you just found out that the person that beat you by a hairline entered fraudulently, what would you call him? What would you call a person that resembles quite like you? It might be possible that you would want to call the person in that horserace a big jerk or maybe call the person that looks like you your twin. However, for these two definitions there is a word for both, Ringer. This word has a long history and dates back very far. Although it has a long history, the true meaning of the word does not differ that much of how it is used today.
The origin of the word dates back from 1425 when it was used for a person who rang a bell. Although it was used in that context so far back it has not changed at all since today. However, it was not always spelled as it is today. It was spelled, R-y-n-g-e-r as used in this example; “The seker (seeker) shall fynde (find), and the rynger (ringer) or knokker (knocker) shall enter.” This definition of ringer alone was used up to 1875 until a mechanical device was invented for ringing a bell which then defined the device as a ringer.
