Phoenix Jackson From “A Worn Path”
In the journey of life, there are many difficulties that have to be
overcome. To overcome these problems, determination and bravery are
required. Phoenix Jackson is an elderly Negro woman who wears a “red rag
on her hair” (Welty 150). She wears a long, striped dress and a long apron made
out of “sugar sacks” (Welty 150). She carries a cane made out of an old umbrella,
and her eyes are “blue with age” (Welty 150). Her skin is full of wrinkles, and her
cheeks are “illuminated by a yellow burning under the dark” (Welty 150). Under
Phoenix’s rag, “her hair came down on her neck in the frailest of ringlets, still
black with an copper like odor”(Welty 151). Phoenix is making a journey on the
“Natchez Trace” (Welty 154) in December to get medicine for her sick grandson.
Eudora Welty shows Phoenix Jackson in “A Worn Path” to be determined, brave
and caring.
