Culture and development of society is unequivocally affected by the progress and trends of technology, the two have an association between them in how they influence one another. Art sets the trend for culture and how people in any given culture will react and in turn the people will set the trend through their culture in how art itself will be produced, they each reflect reality and at the same time mold reality.
In The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, Walter Benjamin says that art through technology allows for us to reproduce to the masses, give them more access to art, and increase equality for all. He argues that with this new technology we are able to distribute all forms of art to the masses and make the need for originals and authenticity obsolete which will in turn make the separation of classes less and less and bring everyone to a level of equality.
Benjamin is addressing his own point in time and its new technologies particularly in art. He talks about power and control in how minds and lives can be shaped through mechanical reproduction.
