Antigone Vs. Nora

    For the past centuries, women are seen as a mere being under the possession of male dominance. Such bias is an ongoing cycle that women face in a society, which is expected of them to “play” a role that is acceptable to the social order. Antigone by Sophocles and A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, both portray how the female protagonist responded to the expectation of their individual society; ultimately making a virtuous decision that defy the society that they live in. Even thought there might be some differences between Nora and Antigone however, Nora’s society, values and outcome corresponded to that of Antigone. Antigone and Nora lived in a society where a woman is looked down upon through the eyes of a male. Women’s role in the society is to support their husband and take care of the kids. Whereas, the male, undertake the decisions making, work and politics. During a heated argument between Antigone and Cereno, Cereno stated, “ while I live, no women will rule me.” Through Ceneno’s words, one could predict that the society is not in favor of women suffrage.
