Romeo and Juliet
William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” captures the overthrowing force of love at first sight. The story takes place during the Renaissance Era in Verona and Mantua, Italy. From the beginning of the story it very clear that the passionate and intense love of two different social statuses is prone for extreme emotions.
The story starts out with a sonnet that describes the fate from which Romeo and Juliet cannot escape. It sets the story of two young lovers and the terrible conflicts between their families. The prologue sets the mood and tone of the events to come.
In Act 1 Scene 1, the layers of Verona’s society are explained, from those lowest in power, the servants, to the Prince who occupies the political and social pinnacle. Also during a brawl the personalities of some main characters are shown. Benvolio as thoughtful and fearful of the law, Tybalt as a hothead, and Romeo as distracted and lovelorn teenager.
