The Wife Of Martin Guere - Arnaud du Tilh

    Arnaud du Tilh is a rogue who in the end deserves sympathy from neither Bertrande nor the reader. Discuss ESSAY: Arnaud du Tilh does not deserve the sympathy from both Bertrande and the reader. This is due to his deceiving during his time impostering, Martin Guere, the household authority. Arnaud’s arrogance and selfishness cause him to abuse this authority causing him to take advantage of many people. This gave Bertrande great distress, which eventually brought ruin to the estate. Arnaud is very deceitful. His return as Martin, the household’s authority, is well rehearsed and researched. In fact he acts the role so well that “the loneliness of the house was dissipated” (p40) as people readily accepted him. Arnaud even manages make the household believe that Martin is “like his father, but become gracious” (p37). This dishonest household authority role is a main cause that Arnaud deserves no sympathy.
