Not only are the fossil fuels going to be extinct before long they are also harmful to the Earth. Burning fossil fuels is a major source of anthropogenic CO2, a major heat-trapping greenhouse has. Burning oil also produces nitrous and sulfur oxides that damage people, crops, trees and fish. (Harper pg 227)
Alternative fossil fuel choices are increasing more and more throughout the years. Hydroelectric power, Biomass energy, geothermal energy and solar power are all being used today in the United States. Currently about 7.6 of the energy used in the United States comes from renewable energy. Of this hydroelectric accounts for 4, biomass 3 and wind, solar, and geothermal energy accounts for the remaining .6. About 85 of the energy comes from Fossil Fuels nuclear power provides the last 8. (World News Digest pg 2)
Hydroelectric power is the use of waterpower to drive water turbines, which in turn drive electricity generators (Gilpin pg 111). As I listed above this accounts for 4 of the consumption in the United States, however this percentage varies of different countries anywhere from 0 to 50 in Switzerland.

In the not-too-distant-future there will come a point when fossil fuels will have been depleted and humans will be forced to find alternative sources with which to power automobiles, household heating units and myriad other machinery that utilizes fuel. However, waiting until supplies are exhausted before establishing a workable alternative would place a major hardship upon energy demands.
