Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead - Hamlet: A comparison
Stoppard has relied heavily on the text of Hamlet for the development of Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead primarily in order to provide starting ground for the reflection of Post-Modernist 20th century world view in common themes of literature and to illustrate the contrasting views with those recent times and the times of Shakespeare in light of these themes, such as those of fate, death, and others. Due to the shift in attention from the affluent royalty to that of the common man, Stoppard has expanded and added to the themes used by Shakespeare to suit the change in times, and what has resulted is indeed something very different to that of Shakespeare’s play. Also Stoppard has in his play altered Hamlet’s character almost beyond recognition to suit a more absurdist audience of modern times. In addition, Stoppard has also used intertextuality with Hamlet within his play at times to contrast 17th and 20th century language discrepancy, yet Stoppard’s choice of text to present in his play also illustrates his bias towards Hamlet in the play and nepotism towards Ros and Guil. Dramatic techniques are also used frequently in Stoppard’s play, some taken from Shakespeare and altered, others created by the author.
