Portrait of Cosimo I de’ Medici as Orpheus
Agnolo di Cosimo di Mariano Tori, or more commonly known as Bronzino, was born on November 17, 1503 in Monticelli, a small village on the outskirts of Florence. He later died on November 23, 1572. The origin of his nickname, Bronzino, is uncertain, but perhaps derived from his having a dark complexion. He was a Florentine Mannerist painter, poet, and pupil of Jacopo Pontormo. Not only was he a student of Pontormo, but also the adopted son. Pontormo took Bronzino in and treated him as if he was his very own flesh and blood. (McCorquodale)
Bronzino was deeply influenced by Pontormo, but never somewhat achieved the emotional strengths apparent in his father’s works. Approximately around 1530, Bronzino moved away from the care of his master and was able to develop as an artist and build a career independently.
Besides being guided by his father, Pontormo, Bronzino idolized Raphael and Michelangelo, who were great artists of the Renaissance era. Bronzino was also one of the founding members of the Accademia del Disegno in 1563 with Giorgio Vasari, another one of Pontormo’s pupils.
