Poverty and Hunger in New York State
In the state of New York, one of the most important topics this holiday season is the fact that growing numbers of people are going hungry. People are living in poverty within our own country and our own state, even though we are living in one of the most technologically advanced and wealthiest nations in the world. With a large number of people in poverty in this state, some actions need to be taken to correct this problem.
The hungry encompass much more of New York state than most people think. Over 904,884 New Yorkers rely on emergency food programs or food pantries each week. Not only that, but 10% of New York families are at risk of hunger. These people have low quality diets or must resort to emergency food if they cannot afford what they need. 3.9% of New Yorkers experience hunger. These people frequently skip meals and eat far too little, sometimes going without food for a day, or days at a time.
An estimated 340,080 children in New York State are going hungry, with 1,037,420 either hungry or at risk of hunger. Of those using food pantries, 49% are children.
