Brandenburg vs. Ohio Charles Brandenburg was a leader of the Ku Klux Klan. On June 9th 1969, he was convicted under the Ohio Criminal Syndicalism statute of 1919 for advocating “unlawful or violent means in pursuit of political reform.” At a farm in Hamilton County, he gave a speech to twelve fellow Ku Klux Klan members.
