Being assertive
Do you handle put-downs well? Are you sometimes unable to express
your feelings and opinions openly and honestly in a group? Are you often timid
when interacting with people in positions of authority? Do you react
constructively to critisism? Do you sometimes explode in anger when things go
wrong,or are you able to keep your cool? Do you find it difficult to maintain eye
contact when talking? If you're uncomfortable with someone smoking near you,
do you tell them so? Are you afraid of arranging a a date or social event? For any
person who has trouble in these situations you should practice being assertive.
Assertiveness involves behavior that is both straightforward but yet not
offensive. The behavior can be either verbal or nonverbal. Assertiveness
involves taking into account both your own rights and the rights of other people.
It sounds simple but for many people appropriate assertiveness is hard to master.
