Don Quixote & Sancho Panza

    More than three centuries ago, Cervantes wrote Don Quixote to eradicate the outmoded values of chivalry. The plot revolves around “adventures” of a self-proclaimed knight-errant, Don Quixote de la Mancha, and his squire, Sancho Panza. The contrast of Sancho Panza to Don Quixote as realist and idealist is extremely amusing. Yet, beneath this comedy, there lies a complex interaction between them due to their inconsistent behaviours and attitudes. Such inconsistencies result from Don Quixote’s switching from an eccentric knight-errant to a sane traveler caused by his deliberate madness and Sancho Panza’s living in both a reality and his master’s imagination because of his simple-mindedness and his blind quest for materialistic success. Cid Hamete Benengeli, the supposedly original author of the novel, makes it clear from the beginning that Don Quixote has features of an idealist. Having read too many books of chivalry with “such pleasure and devotion,” he ends up finding all the improbable fictitious events more appealing than his own life.
