Entertainment value of Othello
The elements of language, vocabulary, theatricality, character involvement and dramatic irony are some of the key factors in the entertainment value of Othello. It Is through the analysis of these elements and the factors that relate to them that we will realise Shakespeare has presented an alternate form of entertainment that thrives on the value of negative aspects of the play.
A principle involvement in the entertainment value of Othello is created in the use of language. You will find that Shakespeare’s use of words is linked to the internal cohesion with the themes of the play i.e.: racism, sexual offence. It is the use of barbarism, offensive, confronting and veracious text that in specific areas would excite the audience by stirring up such emotions in themselves. It is primarily Iago and Roderifo who deliver such text as their words: “ An old black ram is tupping your white ewe……you’ll have your daughter covered with a barberry hoarse……” area both racist and sexually offensive and poses an almost humorous overtone due to Shakespeare’s colourful use of adjectives to describe a generally wicked situation.
