The Weird Stone of Brisingamen
It is the purpose of this extended response to offer a brief summary of events and then go on to consider the use of imagery to help our understanding of character, setting and theme.
The novel is concerned with two children, Susan and Colin who have come to stay for the summer with Mr and Mrs Mossock on their farm. The farm is located on The Edge, a magical and mysterious place, as the mines at Alderly Edge leads to a secret underworld. It is an underworld of Wizards, Svarts, sleeping Knights and the darker evil forces of Nastrond. Colin and Susan soon discover that the moonstone that Susan has as a family heirloom, is in fact a magic, powerful talisman of evil. It has the power to awaken all forces of evil. Having lost his own magical stone, Cadellin, guardian of the sleeping knights finds himself in perilous danger. The Morrigan, a dark evil witch who lives in the human world as Selina Place, is given the precious stone by Grimnir. Together they try to call up the stones power but are deteriorated by the courage and power of Susan and Colin. The novel concludes with a bitter battle between the forces of good and evil, with Cadellin finally having ownership of the firefrost. With this power he scatters and destroys Grimnir, M
