    Booker T. Washington Reflects (1901) During the late 19th century, following the emancipation of slaves, the United States, which was very vulnerable after having fought the Civil War, entered into a state of rehabilitation formerly known as Reconstruction. Upon his reflection in 1901, Booker T. Washington, who took over as leader of the African-American race in 1895 after the death of his predecessor, Fredrick Douglass, points out several mistakes made by both Caucasians and African- Americans during the period of Reconstruction. One of the main problems evinced as a result of Reconstruction was the purpose on which its foundation was established. After having fought the Civil War, there were still many tensions evident between the North and the South which could not be resolved or put to rest over night.
