Revenge themes in the Film
HEAVEN 2002
Heaven, by German director Tom Tywker, is based on a script written by the Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski, who died suddenly in 1996. It was meant to be part 1 of a trilogy titled Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, and similar to his famous Three Colours film trilogy. Kieslowski¡¦s work is well known for the conveying the ambiguity of the human condition through the density of his plots, complex characterisation, and symbolism. Examples of ambiguity in this revenge tragedy include the fact that we should hate Philippa¡¦s act of vengeance, except that we see she is almost mad with grief at the drug baron who deals in death; we should be able to dismiss the apparently inconsequential novice policeman Filippo Fabrizi, except that we see he represents purity in a corrupt society; we should resent the corruption of the legal system, except that we see that personal revenge only leads to more evil. This ambiguity gives depth to the film and resonates with the emotional and intellectual elements examined in other examples of the genre studied so far.
