Makah Tribe
In 1999, seventy-five years after ending the traditional practice in American waters, the Makah Indian tribe had resumed the killing of gray whales. The Makah tribe had traditionally used the meat of the gray whale for “subsistence and ceremonial purposes”, but they stopped killing whales in the 1920s, after the species begin to die out. Since making the decision to resume the practice, the Makah tribe had met with plenty of opposition. Several environmental groups considered the ritual to be animal cruelty and immoral. Several of them protested at Neah Bay and attempted to stop the Makah from killing a whale.
