    In 1999, seventy-five years after ending the traditional practice in American waters, the Makah Indian tribe had resumed the killing of gray whales. The Makah tribe had traditionally used the meat of the gray whale for “subsistence and ceremonial purposes”, but they stopped killing whales in the 1920s, after the species begin to die out.
