The Great Gatsby

    Flaws and immaculate qualities both exist in humans. While a person’s better qualities lead him to success, the imperfections result in his downfall. As in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo makes a foolish decision and pursues Juliet even when he knows that both their families are fierce enemies. This results in their downfall; Romeo and Juliet die. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, certain characters possess flaws that that result them to make foolish choices. Though heroic at times, Gatsby’s flaw, foolishness, results in him making inappropriate choices about how he tries to achieve status and achieve love, ultimately resulting in his downfall. Gatsby makes inappropriate choices to achieve money and fame even though he is heroic at times. He fights in WWI and achieves several medals for his brave and heroic performance, “I was promoted to be a major, and every Allied government gave me a decoration” (65). Gatsby advances with his battalion machine gun and kills a large number of German soldiers with the help of his infantry.
